About our Approach
Our treatment is based on the Scientist-Practioner model wherein all services provided have a basis in empirical research. Our approach is to assess the source of the presenting problem and offer treatment accordingly in collaboration with the client (and/or parents ). Presenting problems with a basis in childhood (e.g., childhood sexual abuse) tend to require longer term therapy to alleviate symptoms than do problems with a source in adulthood (e.g., adjusting to relationship termination).
An intake interview is conducted during the initial session to evaluate both emotional and behavioral functioning. The interview also includes taking family and developmental histories as well as identifying potential stressors and coping strategies. Psychological testing may be used in the diagnostic process. Depending on the diagnosis, clients are then offered treatment options. Together with the therapist, the client determines which therapy best meets his/her needs.
Referrals
Self-referrals as well as referrals from physicians, lawyers, social workers, and other professionals are welcome.
Fees
The fee of therapists are not covered by Medicare. However, most insurance plans reimburse for part or all of the fees. Payment through Employee Assistance Programs (e.g. NB Power, NB government, UNB) is also accepted.
